Gum disease (Periodontal disease) is an inflammation of the support and surroundings of the teeth, including the bone that is holding the teeth in place. Often times, this disease can be overlooked, but it is easily controlled or prevented. An infected gum line can progress to affect the bone that surrounds and supports your teeth. Periodontitis can lead to tooth loss. It is also a risk factor for heart and lung diseases and has also been associated with diabetes. Treatment includes professionally cleaning the pockets around teeth to prevent damage to surrounding bone. Advanced cases may require additional surgery.
